Wondering what is dry needling or worried about the procedure, pain it would cause and if its right for you?
Dry needling is a commonly offered therapy for people with muscle, ligament or tendon pain. It is a technique grounded in Western medicine and neuroanatomy used by healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists, chiropractors, and acupuncturists.
Dry needling can be used to treat various musculoskeletal conditions, such as chronic pain, trigger points, tension headaches, myofascial pain syndrome, and sports injuries. It is often used in conjunction with other therapies, such as manual therapy, exercise, and rehabilitation.
The goal of dry needling is to stimulate the trigger points, which are often tight knots or bands within the muscle, to elicit a twitch response. This twitch response helps to relax the muscle, improve blood flow, and release tension. By targeting these trigger points, dry needling aims to alleviate pain, improve range of motion, and restore proper muscle function. It involves a thin filiform needle that penetrates the skin and stimulates underlying myofascial trigger points and muscular and connective tissues. The needle allow us to target tissues that are not manually palpable.
Dry needling involves inserting thin, solid needles into specific points in the body, known as trigger points or myofascial trigger points. The needles used in dry needling are typically very thin and do not inject any fluid into the body. They are inserted directly into the muscle or soft tissue at the trigger points.
Dry needling is always performed by trained and licensed healthcare professionals who have received appropriate skill and experience.
